Collection: University of Delaware Special Collections Online Exhibitions and Finding Aids
Description: 2014 marks the centenary of the birth of the grandfather of the Beats, el hombre invisible, the gentleman junkie: William S. Burroughs (1914-1997). Burroughs was a founding member of the Beat Generation, which paved the way for counterculture movements in the 1960s. He addressed early themes of gay liberation, deconstructed the linearity of narrative fiction, and influenced cyberpunk and punk rock. “Nothing Is True, Everything Is Permitted”: William S. Burroughs at 100 pays tribute to the most famous junkie writer, the iconoclast, and the reluctant icon. This exhibition was originally on display in the Special Collections main gallery on the second floor of Morris Library from January 28--June 13, 2014.

Description: From its very earliest days, the University of Delaware Library has benefitted from the generosity of both monetary gifts and donations of materials, including rare books and manuscripts. Many of Special Collections’ most unique items have been gifts, and without the munificence of donors, these items could not have been otherwise acquired. The exhibition features items which were donated in the past decade. The materials on display are organized to complement Special Collections’ core collecting areas of literature, the arts, history and Delawareana, and the history of science. This exhibition was originally on display in the Special Collections main gallery on the second floor of Morris Library from August 23-December 16, 2011.

Description: During the Civil War, Delaware was one of five border states—in addition to Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and later West Virginia—slave states that remained in the Union but bordered states that joined the Confederacy. Delaware represented a microcosm of the nation as a whole on matters of states’ rights, slavery, and support for the Union cause. The exhibit reflects Delaware's unqiue position during the Civil War through letters, sermons, speeches, lithographs, photographs and books.

Description: Women’s History Month raises awareness of the essential and influential roles women play in the development of our shared history. Women’s History Week was recognized by Congress in 1981, and in 1987, Congress designated the month of March to the celebration of Women’s History in perpetuity. Each year, the National Women’s History Project identifies a theme that highlights the myriad ways in which women have contributed to community–building and nation–building. The theme for 2012 is “Women’s Education–Women’s Empowerment,” which recognizes the essential role higher education has played in granting women political, economic, and social agency–and the biases, stereotypes, and pseudoscience women have faced to be educated equally with men. This single case exhibition was on display in the Information Room on the first floor of Morris Library from March 1-31, 2012.

Description: The title of this exhibit, “From the Past, for the Future,” refers to the historical denigration and dismissal of the achievements of women and women's reluctance to commit their stories to writing. Biographies and autobiographies represent the acknowledgement of and effort to share women’s stories, which serve as a source of strength for current and future generations. This exhibit features examples of women’s biographies from the print holdings of Special Collections. This single case exhibition was originally on display in the Morris Library Information Room from March 1-March 31, 2011.
