Description: Although it is fair to assume that more people today are reading the news than at this time last year, the newspaper industry is fast becoming a casualty of the coronavirus. As advertising dollars have dramatically decreased, thousands of newspaper staff have been laid off and many papers have either ceased publication entirely or move exclusively online. This has especially been the case for smaller community and faith-based newspapers like the Toronto-based Canadian Jewish News and Winnipeg’s Jewish Post and News.

Description: A study, first reported on Yahoo.com, went so far as to say weight-related conditions were to blame for the high number of hospitilizations resulting from COVID-19. Things like cardiovascular disease. Or diabetes/pre-diabetes. High BMI leading to respiratory problems. The study analyzed more than 7,000 cases of coronavirus from Feb. 12 to March 28. Out of the 457 individuals admitted to an intensive care unit in that time, 358 — or 78 per cent — reported having one or more underlying health conditions.

Theme: COVID-19
Relation: https://archive-it.org/collections/13745
Description: As we hunker down at home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, some of us may find ourselves in a room we’ve rarely occupied before: the kitchen. In many ways, the pandemic has changed our relationship with food. We can’t eat in restaurants. We aren’t spending Sunday dinners with the folks. Quick dashes to the grocery store have been replaced by once-a-week (or less frequent) excursions to stock up. Some of us are watching our expenses more closely than ever as a result of loss of income. Despite the challenges, there are easy ways to adapt to our temporary new reality.

Relation: https://archive-it.org/collections/13745
Description: Maybe you’ve seen them on social media. Maybe you’ve even seen them in your own neighbourhood. So-called "driveway parties," with people arranging lawn chairs, two metres apart. Or meeting in parking lots and socializing from their cars. It’s a physical-distancing loophole that might be tempting, especially as the weather begins to warm up, but Dr. Marcia Anderson, a medical officer of health for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, is pretty frank on the subject. "We would not recommend the driveway, lawn chair, car-parking gatherings."

A Berlin-based online ordering and delivery app, Foodora announced last week that it was ceasing operations in Canada. What was a bit alarming was that the company chose to declare bankruptcy when it closed, owing restaurants across Canada nearly $5 million.

Description: Faith communities are usually safe sanctuaries when the world seems bleak. A heartening side effect of belonging to a faith is that all have rituals and traditions for supporting members through the big events of life, both good and bad: births and deaths, marriages and divorces, coming of age and moving to the nursing home. But these rituals and traditions are at odds with physical distancing. With all the fear and suffering resulting from COVID-18, it’s a time when we most need our faith families, but we’ve been forced to disperse.

Description: Opening doors is the easy part. That’s just a matter of hard work and decree. Now is the time to get a haircut, play a few rounds of golf and have that elective surgery. Now is the time to take the kids to the museum, to pitch a tent at a public campground, to sip wine on the cafe patio down the street. Well, you can do those things now, at least. You may not want to, but the option is there once more. It will be different, of course.

Description: To mask or not to mask? A month into the COVID-19 lockdown, there are clear signs of confusion among the public. When we were all told to stay home and stop socializing, we were also told it was unnecessary to cover our faces in public if we practised rigorous social distancing and hand hygiene. The advice seemed sound, particularly since public health officials wanted to ensure that all available medical-grade masks were made available to people working in health care. But then, that simple narrative began to unravel.
