Description: Minority languages in China are increasingly under threat. Over the past week, the language learning app Talkmate and the online video streaming site Bilibili appeared to remove Tibetan and Uyghur languages from their platforms as a result of government policy, while continuing to allow Mandarin Chinese and numerous foreign languages. The move reflects the CCP’s shift toward a more assimilationist stance on linguistic and ethnic diversity.

Description: Turkey has traditionally been an ally of the Uyghurs due to strong linguistic, cultural, and religious ties. Yet Ankara's political and economic alliances with Beijing, including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), have complicated these historical bonds, divided Turkish public opinion, and reshaped Turkey’s official policy regarding the Uyghurs in the past years.

Description: The International Uyghur Human Rights and Democracy Foundation (IUHRDF) was established in 2005 by former prisoner of conscious Rebiya Kadeer, and Uyghur intellectuals in the United States. Mrs. Kadeer was released by the Chinese government to the United States on March 17, 2005 after serving nearly six years in Chinese prison for defending the human rights of the Uyghur people. Chinese authorities decided to release her only after persistent pressure exerted by the U.S. government and human rights organizations. Since her release, Ms. Kadeer has become the international voice of the Uyghur people in championing their cause.

Description: On the contrary, this is a lived reality in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the far north-west of China, where the Chinese state, in concert with a number of China’s major surveillance technology companies, has striven to perfect new means of monitoring the region’s Uyghur population. Researchers estimate that, between 2016 and 2019, up to one million people in the region had been detained without trial in a system of “re-education” camps. In addition, between 2017 and 2020, 533,000 people were formally prosecuted for a variety of “crimes” under broad definitions of “extremism” and “terrorism.”
