New York City Places and Spaces

Collected by: Columbia University Libraries

Archived since: Jan, 2010

Description:

A growing collection of websites selected by the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library staff for web archiving preservation by the Columbia University Libraries' Web Resources Collection Program. Website captures began in 2010 and are ongoing; in 2020, to reflect the collection's evolving subject focus, the collection title was changed to 'New York City Places and Spaces' (from the original 'Avery Library Historic Preservation and Urban Planning'). The collection's principal thematic focus is documenting the evolution of the built environment and public spaces in and around New York City through the interaction of historic preservation efforts and new development projects within urban planning debates. Selected websites are mostly published by non-profit groups or individuals based in the New York City area, including historic preservation groups, neighborhood associations, community development groups, public policy organizations, parks and open space conservancies, and both sponsors and critics of ongoing development projects.

URL: http://www.artiststudioaffordabilityproject.org/

Description: "As gentrification spreads, we are priced out of neighborhood after neighborhood. Most working artists cannot afford this city's exponentially increasing studio rents: many of us are adjuncts, freelancers, part-time, or otherwise unprotected workers. We all know of fellow artists who have recently lost their spaces. The Artist Studio Affordability Project (ASAP) is an effort to bring this issue to the attention of the public and local politicians. We focus on raising awareness about the crisis of affordable studio space, and on advocating legislation that will protect and expand affordable artist studios."

Description: "The preservation of Tin Pan Alley, 28th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue, was aided for many years by the absence of development in that area of New York City...With the recent rise in popularity and development of the area, this has all changed ... all of the remaining buildings that constitute Tin Pan Alley--45, 47, 49, 51, 53, and 55 West 28th Street, have been sold as a parcel to a real estate developer. Because of the large size of the parcel and the buyer’s experience in New York City real estate development, it is likely that all of Tin Pan Alley will be demolished to make room for high-rise development in the near future."
