Description: One of the oldest schools in Virginia and the second of its kind in the world, the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB), located in historic and scenic Staunton, VA, was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on March 31, 1838. As the school celebrates more than 170 years of continued excellence in educating deaf and blind children, it remains at the forefront of educational technology. The school utilizes some of the latest and most advanced audio-visual equipment and disability tailored computer applications in its classrooms to provide its students with the best education. Now, as in 1839, the arms of the school are open wide for the deaf and blind children of Virginia. The 2009 General Assembly established the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind (VSDB) in Staunton as a state agency with its own board of visitors independent of the Virginia Department of Education, effective July 1, 2009. The legislature directed the superintendent of public instruction to designate a VDOE staff member to serve as consultant to the VSDB Board of Visitors on matters pertaining to instruction, federal and state special education requirements and school accreditation.

Description: The Virginia Public Safety Foundation (VPSF), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was established in 1993 through the merger of two separate organizations, the Virginia Silver Star Foundation and the Virginia Police Foundation. Each existed to provide a single service: the Silver Star Foundation to support the families of police officers killed in the line of duty with financial assistance, and the Police Foundation to provide educational scholarships to the children of police officers killed in the line of duty. When VPSF formed through the merger of its preceding organizations, the mission was altered to include as benefactors all public safety officers in Virginia-police officers, volunteer and paid firefighters, volunteer and paid emergency medical technicians, and corrections officers. VPSF serves all public safety officers. Under the guidance of a distinguished board of directors made up of all former Virginia governors as well as leaders in business and public safety, VPSF delivers support to Virginia's safety officers through several important missions: > Assist the families of officers killed in the line of duty. > Provide education scholarships to surviving dependants of officers killed in the line of duty. > Assist officers unable to work due to an injury in the line of duty. > Administer the Commonwealth Public Safety Medal of Valor program.

Description: Virginia Memory is part of the online presence of the Library of Virginia, the state archives and reference library at the seat of government for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1823, the Library maintains vast and varied collections of print materials, manuscripts, archival records, newspapers, photographs and ephemera, maps and atlases, rare books, and fine art that tell the history of the commonwealth and its people. Since the mid-1990s, the Library has digitized parts of the collections in an effort to make our materials more widely available to our online users. In 2006, the Library began reviewing its online presence and came to the conclusion that our traditional Web site could no longer deliver effectively our online content; promote our many services to educators, the public, and government employees; guide users through our collections; and accommodate new and exciting digital materials created by the archivists, librarians, educators, and historians on our staff. We realized that increasingly our users would visit us virtually, rather than physically, and their expectations for their online visits would be influenced by and change according to the Web technologies available on other sites they use every day for work, research, and entertainment. In 2007 and 2008, work began in earnest on the redesign of our agency site, as well as the creation of this offering, Virginia Memory. Virginia Memory has been designed as a gateway to the Library's digital collections, whether those items are indexed and delivered through traditional library systems, offered in online exhibitions, organized as resources for educators and students, or presented as research articles by staff who work with the collections on a daily basis.

Description: In 1992, the Virginia General Assembly and its Joint Commission on Health Care initiated the Virginia Health Care Foundation to promote and fund innovative public-private partnerships increasing access to primary care for Virginia’s uninsured and medically underserved. Now, more than 20 years later, VHCF is one of the key elements of the Commonwealth’s strategy to buttress local primary care delivery systems and strengthen the health safety net. As a public/private partnership, VHCF combines the flexibility and nimble nature of the private sector with the resources and institutional means of the public sector. This has allowed us to produce a remarkable return on investment. Since the Foundation’s inception, VHCF has leveraged an average $11 in cash, health services and other in-kind contributions for each dollar expended. VHCF is proof that public/private partnerships can achieve great results. We are grateful to the Virginia General Assembly, the Governor and our esteemed partners. Working together, VHCF will continue to build and foster partnerships, solidify proven initiatives and launch new endeavors.
