Description: "Middlebury Unmasked is a survivor-created, survivor-led activist collective at Middlebury College. Our goal is simple: to tell the very stories that campus policy has forbidden many of us to discuss. We invite others to hear our stories and think critically about how Title IX functions in practice, even within schools which are compliant with Title IX. The symbolism behind the masks used in this project cannot be understated; while Middlebury is a site of great trauma and institutional violence, our peers can also stand alongside us in solidarity and support. Both claimants and respondents have rights which we must critically examine."

When student protestors disrupted the talk, Murray and Middlebury College Prof. Allison Stanger, who was to moderate the Q & A, moved to a video studio that had been set up for the occasion so that Murray could give his talk with questions to follow by Stanger. Description: Exhibit statement: "Middlebury is committed to immersive learning that prepares students to lead engaged, consequential, and creative lives, contribute to their communities, and address the world’s most challenging problems; the history of the institution’s observation of the night sky embodies this mission. Since the 19th century, students have gazed at the sky, even before a formal observatory existed. For more than two centuries, the study of astronomy has flourished, and has held a central place in Middlebury’s history; from astronomy’s presence as a required course upon the College’s founding in 1800, to the use of the cupola of Old Chapel as the College’s first observatory, to the opening of the observatory north of Pearsons Hall in 1937, and finally to today’s Mittelman Observatory, the largest and best equipped facility of any institution in Vermont. This continuing evolution illustrates Middlebury’s commitment to scientific exploration. Join this exploration in Through the Telescope: The Observatories of Middlebury College, an exhibition beginning on the 6th floor of McCardell Bicentennial Hall, and winding up to the 7th floor where today’s observatory stands. This exhibition explores the evolution of observational astronomy at Middlebury in the context of institutional history and scientific discovery."

Description: Project description written by Amelia Pollard, Class of 2020: "On March 10, Middlebury students received a life-altering e-mail: “Following spring break, students who can will be expected to remain at home and not return to campus until further notice.” Many had not anticipated such extreme measures in response to the viral outbreak so soon. But within days of the college’s announcement, as the virus began to sweep across the country, it became clear that we were entering a once-in-a-century period of upheaval and isolation. Through this project, we’re hoping to give voice to the despair and hope precipitated by the interruption of campus life, even while we’re all quarantining in different corners of the globe. As a college newspaper, we feel an obligation to go on. We are determined to continue telling your stories, no matter how many thousands of miles away we are from one another. We will try to retain as much of a sense of the Middlebury community as we can. The Middlebury Off-Campus Project is a compilation of these stories — from students, employees, alumni and residents of Addison County — chronicling this surreal time. We will publish the submissions we’ve received in phases. The first round was gathered from members of the class of 2020 and 2020.5, graduating seniors whose final semesters were truncated by the viral outbreak; it was published on April 13. The second round was published on April 20 and the third was published on April 28. These two phases feature various individuals from the Middlebury community. On May 8, we featured the stories of nine international students in partnership with the International Students Organization (ISO). And this most recent round was published on May 22, after classes have ended and this unusual spring semester has ground to a halt. Stay tuned for more stories as we publish submissions weekly. We also teamed up with the folks working on Middlebury’s Engaged Listening Project for the first-ever Off-Campus Podcast. Give it a listen on Stitcher or Spotify. Do you want to take part in this historic project? We will accept stories all semester."
