Title: Melbourne Social Equity Institute

URL: https://socialequity.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Institutes

Description: The MSEI supports interdisciplinary research on social equity issues across the full spectrum of social life including health, law, education, housing, work and transport. The Institute brings together researchers from across the University of Melbourne to identify unjust or unfair practices that lead to social inequity and work towards finding ways to ameliorate disadvantage. The MSEI was established in mid-2012 and is the newest of the University’s interdisciplinary research institutes. The Institute supports interdisciplinary research, facilitates researchers working with government and community organisations and helps with the dissemination and translation of research for public benefit. The University Council approved the establishment of the Institute in April 2012. Prior to this, a University forum in May 2009 canvassing staff support to establish a Social Equity Institute generated considerable interest and recommendations for building capacity in this area. Capitalising on this momentum, a Social Equity Reference Group was established in November 2009 to oversee initial consultation and planning for a Social Equity Institute. A review of research activity and extensive consultations undertaken by the Reference Group revealed substantial breadth and depth of expertise in social equity research across the University of Melbourne; and identified significant opportunities to harness distributed research activity to create innovative, high-impact research across the University and across disciplinary boundaries. Further momentum was generated by Social Equity theme researchers participating in the interdisciplinary seed funding offered in 2009, 2010 and 2011, with forty two researchers involved in securing eight grants, to catalyse activity in key areas. In addition, the collaborative activity already established by the University in its partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence demonstrated the opportunities for the MSEI to engage with similar organisations and NGOs.

Description: We are the Quantitative and Applied Ecology group in the School of Botany at the University of Melbourne. We’re a diverse bunch of ecologists who work across a wide spectrum of taxa and environments from frogs to flowers and deserts to desktops. As a group, our research foci include environmental decision making, ecosystem management, and conservation biology, but we won’t shy away from attacking bread and butter topics like community and population ecology, and ecophysiology. The group also forms part of two larger research groups: The Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions (CEED) and the NERP Environmental Decisions Hub. Two core beliefs underlie the group’s approach to research. First, we firmly believe that an emphasis on the careful and thoughtful use of quantitative methods and models underpins robust ecological inquiry. And second, to manage our environment and make good decisions requires an understanding of ecological, economic and social dynamics, built on a strong foundation of basic ecology. We are the Quantitative and Applied Ecology Research Group (QAEco), based in the School of Agriculture, Food, and Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Melbourne. QAEco is a diverse group of individuals who pursue a range of research topics in ecology. In our work we tackle issues from the pressing - such as climate change and conservation - to the fundamental - such as population- and individual-level processes.

Title: Grainger Museum

URL: https://grainger.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Collection Management (University)

Description: Grainger's thoughts of establishing an autobiographical museum began in the early 1920s, initially in response to the sudden death of his mother Rose. In a letter to his friend Balfour Gardiner, dated 3 May 1922, Grainger mentioned the idea for the first time: 'All very intimate letters or notes should be deposited in an Australian Grainger Museum, preferably in birth-town Melbourne'. The project developed for some years in Grainger's mind. In the 1955 Museum Legend Aims of the Grainger Museum , Grainger set forth his intentions. Basically, he wanted to stress the creative side of music (composition), rather than the interpretive side (performance). Originally called the 'Music Museum and Grainger Museum', and later the 'Grainger Museum', the building was constructed in two stages between 1935 and 1939, facing Royal Parade on the University of Melbourne campus in Parkville. It was officially opened in December 1938. The Grainger Museum is the only purpose-built autobiographical museum in Australia. The building is in a simple Moderne style with some Arts and Crafts characteristics. It was designed by the University's architect, John Gawler of the firm Gawler and Drummond, in close consultation with Grainger, who funded the construction, staffing and upkeep during his lifetime. The Museum contains not only a large quantity of material from his own life, but much material concerning his musical contemporaries, particularly the lesser-known ones, such as his Frankfurt Group of composers. After many initial hindrances, such as the use of the building for storage and other purposes during and after the Second World War, most of the exhibits (including complex display legends) were finally established during Grainger's last visit to Australia in the mid 1950s, although he never completed the project to the extent that he had hoped. During the 1960s the museum was opened to the public on a regular basis for the first time and in 1966 briefly became the setting for concerts and workshops for jazz and avant-garde music. The following 20 years were a period of consolidation. An extensive programme of cataloguing the Museum's holdings - begun in the mid-1970s by the then curator, Dr Kay Dreyfus - resulted in the publication of several important volumes, including three music catalogues and the seminal book The farthest north of humanness: Letters of Percy Grainger 1901-14. As well as the permanent displays, temporary exhibitions highlighting different aspects of the collection were presented and concerts and cultural events were held. Almost since its opening in the 1930s the Museum suffered from problems caused by the building's location and design. In 2003 the building was closed to the public and the collection relocated to offsite storage. This enabled a major problem of building conservation works to be undertaken under the supervision of heritage architects Lovell Chen Pty Ltd, resulting in improved facilities for the collection, visitors and staff. These works have been funded by the University of Melbourne, the University Library and several generous gifts and bequests. The Museum building reopened to the public on Sunday 17 October 2010 with a new suite of exhibitions, curated by Grainger Museum staff and designed by Lucy Bannyan of Bannyan Wood Pty Ltd. The Grainger Museum is now part of the University of Melbourne Library.

Title: Melbourne School of Government

URL: https://government.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Schools

Description: The Melbourne School of Government aims to improve the capacity of decision-makers to build shared futures in the face of hard global challenges and public governance dilemmas.
This means: providing politicians, public servants and citizens with sound evidence to help them consider the long-term consequences of the choices they make supporting the development of robust public institutions that are able to deliver programmes and services but also able defend the public interest, and contributing to a culture of public discussion and debate to ensure that new ideas and policy options are fully examined.

Achieving these ambitions in a world where the challenges are complex and interconnected requires access to multi-disciplinary expertise and know-how that can offer insights into the scientific, technical, ethical and social dimensions of public problems and governance dilemmas. The Melbourne School of Government aims to do this by bringing together University experts with politicians, industry leaders and civil society organisations and creating a fertile environment where ideas, disciplinary expertise and leadership combine to generate wise and actionable solutions.

Working with colleagues from a range of disciplines including economics, development studies, international relations, law, politics and management, the new School will inspire and nurture a future generation of leaders devoted to public service and committed to improving our world. Our curriculum will be attentive to the hard global challenges and public governance dilemmas we face, will be informed by important geo-political trends such as the rise of Asia, and will equip our graduates with the necessary tools and skills to turn ideas into practical action.
