Description: The George Paton Gallery Archive is a collection of material dated between 1972-c.1990 and includes Annual Reports to Visual Arts Board, Australia Council, correspondence, exhibition catalogues, publications, photographs, slides, video recordings, audio recordings, posters and more. The purpose of this blog is to share items of interest to the archivist processing and listing the George Paton Gallery collection and discuss significant connections and events as they arise. The collection is available for access through the University of Melbourne Archives to researchers or anyone interested in art an Melbourne history and culture. An online, searchable list of the collection will be accessible early 2013. The Ewing Gallery was established in the Union building in 1938. In 1971 Kiffy Carter (nee Rubbo) was appointed director of the Ewing Gallery and Rowden White Library, and began a programme of changing exhibitions funded by the Student Union. From 1974 funding also came from the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council; in that year a meeting room was converted to the George Paton Gallery and it merged with the Ewing Gallery. The Gallery was at the cutting edge of the contemporary art scene in Melbourne, but was increasingly criticized within the student body for catering to the wider art community rather than the student community. It wound up at the end of 1990 after the withdrawal of Student Union funding. The Ewing Collection was transferred to the University Museum of Art. The gallery reopened in 1994 and is still operating today with a focus on serving students and providing a professional experience, not only to University of Melbourne students but all Victorian Art Schools. The calibre and prestige remains high; many aspiring and acclaimed artists and curators have been associated with the George Paton Gallery since its reopening, the gallery itself a significant Melbourne exhibition and cultural venue.

Description: History and Philosophy of Science studies science just as science studies the world. From global warming to gene technologies, from cyber-relationships, to religion and politics, science and technology mediate change and help us understand the world and our place in it. HPS brings together teaching and research in the history of science and medicine, the philosophy of science, the social studies of science and technology, Social Theory and Computer Applications. HPS seeks to bridge the two cultures of the sciences and the humanities. And with science and technology's central place in modern life, we need to think about scientific knowledge and its applications in a systematic, critical way. While most of us are not professionally trained to manipulate scientific knowledge independently, we can acquire a form of scientific and technological literacy that enables us to understand 'where the science is coming from' and what it means for us and our needs. The University of Melbourne began teaching HPS in 1946, one of the first places in the world to do so. It is one of the most eclectic programs in the university, embracing interests in 'almost everything'.

Description: The Festival of Ideas on Climate Change/Cultural Change was one of the best Melbourne experiences anybody could have. It joined the brains, the knowledge and imagination of University of Melbourne academics with a broad swathe of Australian and international intellectuals and writers to address the major problems confronting Australia. We have to change and how we shall confront and handle that change is uppermost on everybody's mind: suggestions and solutions, answers and doubts were freely expressed and put forward at the Festival. But to me the real success of the Festival lay with the engaged audience: Melbourne wanted to hear, to question and comment on the expert testimony laid before them. That dialogue made the Festival - brought it alive.

Description: Hebrew and Jewish studies have been part of the fabric of teaching at the University of Melbourne since 1946. It began with the endowment of the Lazarus and Abraham Sicree Chair of Semitic Studies and the appointment of the foundation professor, Maurice Goldman. Since then, Hebrew and Jewish studies have earned both national visibility and international recognition, and have acquired a place of honour for scholarly excellence, educational initiatives and cultural outreach. Over the last 60 years, the level and range of courses in Hebrew and Jewish studies at the University of Melbourne has grown and continues to expand to this day. We strive to make available to scholars, students and the public the riches and beauty of the Hebrew language and the Jewish tradition, in all its phases. To that end, we offer Hebrew language courses at four levels, from beginners to advanced. Our teaching program is varied and broad. At an undergraduate level, we offer students an opportunity to explore aspects of the Hebrew language and literature, Jewish history, film, culture, religion, literature, thought, society and politics. At the postgraduate level, the Centre enables students to undertake Honours, Masters and PhD studies.

Description: The School of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne was created in 1993 as the vehicle for providing excellence in language teaching and learning, and for ensuring wider access, across the University community, to high level competency in languages and cultures. Its organisational structure, in close association with the Asia Institute, and its outreach to the rest of the University through the Diploma in Languages and the Diploma in Modern Languages, have been widely seen as models of best practice in the Australian system. Drawing on the expertise of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, the Language Testing Research Centre (LTRC) and the Research Unit for Multilingualism and Cross Cultural Communication (RUMACCC), the school promotes working together in language teaching, learning and assessment strategies. The School also provides a focal point for reflection and research in all areas of linguistics, and in the interface between language and culture.

Description: This site is currently under development and will eventually become a respository for information about G.W.L. Marshall-Hall, his musical and literary works, archival holdings of those works, and their performance history both in Britain and Australia. Samples of manuscript and published scores will be available, where possible, as well as audio samples of scores recorded and/or digitised. This collection aims to provide resources both for scholars and performers interested in Federation-era music by Australian composers and in the cultural history of Melbourne in particular. This website has been developed with the assistance of a Scholarly Information Innovation Grant from the Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne, and by support from the Marshall-Hall Trust and the Grainger Museum. The records of the catalogue of the works of Marshall-Hall in the Grainger Musuem are taken from Thérèse Radic, G.W.L. Marshall-Hall: A Biography and Catalogue (Marshall-Hall Trust, 2002) and are used by permission. Reproductions of scores in the museum are used by permission. Synthesised audio excerpts have been supplied by Richard Divall.

Description: Meanjin was founded in Brisbane by Clem Christesen (the name, pronounced Mee-an-jin, is derived from an Aboriginal word for the finger of land on which central Brisbane sits) in 1940. Meanji moved to Melbourne in 1945 at the invitation of the University of Melbourne. It currently receives funding from the university, the Literature Fund of the Australia Council for the Arts, CAL and Arts Victoria as well as receiving vital support through subscriptions and other sales. At the beginning of 2008 Meanjin became an imprint of Melbourne University Publishing. Known primarily as a literary magazine, Christesen ensured that Meanjin reflected the breadth of contemporary thinking, be it on literature, other art forms, or the broader issues of the times. This breadth has characterised Meanjin for more than 70 years, continuing under its eight subsequent editors – Jim Davidson, Judith Brett, Jenny Lee, Christina Thompson, Stephanie Holt, Ian Britain, Sophie Cunningham and Sally Heath. A list of the contributors to Meanjin includes Australian writers Judith Wright, Kylie Tennant, Manning Clark, Vance & Nettie Palmer, A D Hope, Dymphna Cusack, Martin Boyd, Alan Marshall, Dorothy Hewett, Peter Singer, Vincent Buckley, Donald Horne, Patrick White, Gwen Harwood, Bruce Dawe, David Malouf, Humphrey McQueen, Jack Hibberd, Roberta Sykes, Helen Garner, Alex Miller, Frank Moorhouse, John Morrison, Hal Porter, Rodney Hall, A A Phillips, Peter Carey, Alice Pung, Michelle de Kretser, J M Coetzee, Carmen Callil and Dorothy Porter. International authors published include Jean-Paul Sartre, and Kurt Vonnegut. Meanjin is one of Australia’s best, and oldest, literary journals.
