Description: The Australian Venom Research Unit (AVRU) is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary research unit focused on the problem of venomous injury in Australia and the Asia-Pacific. The AVRU was established by Associate Professor Struan Sutherland, formerly of CSL, on the 1st of July 1994 in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Melbourne. This followed an announcement by CSL Ltd (the former Commonwealth Serum Laboratories) that after a 65 year period, its interest in venom and antivenom research was to cease. The announcement was made immediately prior to the launch of CSL Ltd on the Australian Stock Exchange in May 1994. As such the Unit builds on 70 years of expertise concerning venom and antivenom research and advocacy at CSL. CSL assisted in the establishment of the Unit and initial annual funding came from the Victorian Department of Human Services. Since 2002 the Unit has been mostly funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Health and Ageing as well as the Australia Research Council. The Australian Venom Research Unit aims to provide world-class expertise on the problem of Australia's venomous creatures, their toxins and the care of the envenomed patient.

In 2009, funding for the Institute was provided by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. Both the University of New South Wales and La Trobe University were also founding partners. In 2012 the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education and the State Government of Victoria provided additional core funding. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is funding a Tagore Centre for Global Thought at AII – one of three Centres globally that are being funded by the Government of India. AII will host a Chair in Indian Studies, funded by the State Government of Victoria and the University of Melbourne and a Visiting Chair in Indian Studies sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Description: How animals live and why they live that way are questions addressed by zoologists. Most of the Australian fauna are poorly understood or not even formally named, yet informed management and resource use of Australia's flora, fauna and habitats depend upon zoological knowledge. We need to catalogue what species exist and how they survive in their natural environments. This requires knowledge of their physiology, breeding and reproductive systems, ecology, evolution and behaviour.

Description: WORMS is a grass-roots WWW site, that I established in the early days of the WWW (1995) as a natural extension of my personal home page. Its main purpose was to complement the formal On-Line activities of OR/MS Societies world-wide. You'll recall that at that time not much was offered by the national OR/MS societies. Clearly, the situation is much different now! The large national OR societies (eg INFORMS, ORS) and the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) offer a wide spectrum of services to members and to the public at large.

Description: Scientists for Sustainability is a three-year project managed by the School of Botany at the University of Melbourne which commenced in February 1998. Dr Peter Attiwill, Reader in Botany at the University of Melbourne, is the project’s principal investigator and Ms Jane Fewings is the project coordinator. The project receives funding from the Commonwealth, State and Territory hrough the Ministerial Council on Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture (MCFFA) Standing Committee on Forestry, and from the National Association of Forest Industries and the Forest & Wood Products Research & Development Corporation. The project is intended to fill a gap in education and communication of the science of ecological sustainability. The aims of the project are to promote a better understanding of the independent science that supports sustainable utilisation of Australia’s native forests and to stimulate, and facilitate the participation of independent scientists in debate on sustainable management in the community and amongst stakeholders (politicians, industry, conservation groups). The project has three main objectives: to develop networks between scientists working on the sustainability of forests in Australia and overseas, to develop scientific resource material from scientists who understand and have contributed to sustainable management of Australia’s native forests, to encourage scientists who have worked in the field of sustainability to contribute to public debate on sustainable management of Australia’s native hardwood forests.

Description: The Repertory Grid Technique was a procedure devised by George Kelly to operationalize his theory of the Psychology of Personal Constructs. His theory stated in essence that the choices people made in their lives were based on the way they construed their lives. The events in their lives were the elements of a repertory grid, and the ways in which they construed were the constructs of a grid. The technique has been generalized to work in the widest range of contexts including clinical, educational, and organizational contexts (see Fransella, Bell, & Bannister, 2004 [Publications] for examples). This laboratory is focussed on ways of analysing the data of a Repertory Grid. While specific programs have been devised for this [see Computer Programs & Links ], many ways of analysing grid data can be carried out using standard packages such as SPSS. A comprehensive document outlining this can be found under Downloads.

Description: A new national facility, for airborne remote sensing of key environmental variables is currently being developed through the support of the Australian Research Council, University of Melbourne, University of Newcastle, James Cook University and Airborne Research Australia at Flinders University. The new instruments enable high-resolution mapping of near-surface soil moisture, land surface salinity and temperature, and ocean surface salinity and temperature, providing unprecedented detail on characteristics critical to our understanding and management of the environment. The small instrument size and weight enables use of a light aircraft as the observing platform, providing the national (and international) research community with an affordable tool, hitherto unavailable. The facility includes: o A dual polarisation L-band (1.4GHz) passive microwave radiometer, and o A thermal imager. These instruments enable the measurement of top 5cm soil moisture content and salinity under low to moderate vegetation conditions and/or ocean salinity at 50m resolution, and surface temperature at 1m resolution (approx 300m swath width at 150m flying height) using a low-cost light aircraft as the platform. The dual polarisation microwave measurements enable simultaneous solution of soil and vegetation moisture content while soil temperature is estimated from the thermal data. The high resolution thermal data will allow the development of soil moisture downscaling algorithms from spatially averaged data at a ground resolution that can be adequately monitored using ground-based techniques. Over water, the microwave measurements are a function of ocean salinity and temperature. In this case, the high resolution thermal data will allow simultaneous mapping of ocean salinity and sea surface temperature on the same platform, and the dual polarisation data will allow more accurate extraction of ocean salinity. The thermal data may also be used to estimate evapotranspiration directly. The platform on which these instruments are flown is a Small Environmental Research Aircraft (SERA), a Diamond Dimona MPX. There are also a range of other instruments available to be carried by the aircraft, allowing measurement of vegetation indices, meteorological parameters, evapotranspiration, ground surface elevation and vegetation height. The capability to measure such a comprehensive range of remotely sensed parameters from a single low-cost airborne platform is unique worldwide. Moreover, the high resolution dual polarisation microwave data afforded by this airborne instrument is unprecedented. The thermal imager is presently being tested and the PLMR is due for delivery in November 2004 with test flights presently scheduled for early 2005. We expect the facility to be available for general use from mid 2005.
