Description: In English. Formed in 2002, the BCHR promotes freedoms and basic rights (civil, political and economic), combating racial discrimination, the dissemination of human rights culture, and contributing in providing support and protection for victims and the vulnerable in Bahrain. Its activities include advocacy, training, workshops, seminars, media campaigns, reporting to UN mechanisms and international NGOs and participating in international conferences and workshops. The government attempted to close the organization in 2004, but BCHR remains open after receiving both internal and external support. BCHR president Abd al-Hadi Khawaja arrested in early 2007; VP Nabeel Rajab summoned for questioning regarding violating a gag order on a report of rigged elections in November 2006.
