Founded in 1941 and incorporated in 1961, the MMEA is the professional association for the school music teachers of Maryland. Its mission is to give Marylands music teachers opportunities for professional development, encourage excellence in both teachers and students, and to be an advocate for music education within Maryland schools. MMEA sponsors a variety of activities that provides musical enrichment for both students and teachers of music. The organization sponsors eight annual All-State performance groups (Senior Band, Senior Mixed Chorus, Senior Women's Chorus, Senior Jazz Band, Senior Orchestra, Junior Band, Junior Chorus and Junior Orchestra) which are chosen from all over the state as well as solo and ensemble events. MMEA is a state-wide, non-profit educational organization dedicated to the advancement of music education in Maryland as well as the advancement the musical growth of Marylands teachers and students. It serves as the federated Maryland state unit of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). It also serves as the music department of the Maryland State Teachers Association (MSTA) MMEA currently counts 1,100 Maryland music teachers from every part of the state as members. These teachers teach in every type of school at every grade level. Members have the option of joining one of the many sub organizations connected with the MMEA such as the Maryland Orchestra Directors Association (MODA), the Maryland Choral Directors Association (MCDA), or the Maryland Band Directors Association (MBDA).
