Collection: University of Delaware Special Collections Online Exhibitions and Finding Aids
Description: George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), a British journalist and novelist known for his literary criticism, personal narratives, and works of fiction. Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty–Four became one of the twentieth century’s most influential works of dystopian science fiction. First published on June 9, 1949, Nineteen Eighty–Four explored themes of war, nationalism, censorship, and state–sponsored surveillance, as seen through the eyes of a citizen in the totalitarian state of Oceania. Since its publication, the novel has been translated into dozens of languages and adapted into several film, radio, and television productions. Terms such as “Big Brother”, “Newspeak”, and “thoughtcrime” have become synonymous with authoritarian ideals and political manipulation. This single case exhibition was on display in the Information Room of Morris Library from June 5-July 2, 2012.
