Collection: Two-Spirited People Web Resources
Description: Joey Criddle is a Two Spirit man fighting with other LGBTQ Native Americans to reclaim the place of honor that many Two Spirits once held prior to colonization. The film follows Joey as he leads parallel lives - one as a co-director of the Two Spirit Society of Denver and the other as a father attending the Mississippi wedding of his Pentecostal son. Joey's words bridge the gap between the closeted man he was in Mississippi and the Two Spirit activist he is today.

Description: Jack is a Cree two-spirit transgender man. Born a biological female, he came to understand that his inner identity didn’t match his outer experience. As a gender-queer child, Jack struggled with constant bullying. Jack’s mental health deteriorated throughout his teenage years resulting in a severe depression and ultimately a suicide attempt at 15. Jack’s road to recovery has been challenging, dealing with stigma, discrimination, and especially a lack of adequate services in rural Alberta. Jack’s appreciation for his family’s devotion pushed him to ACT!ON such as applying for the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Youth Council. As the former University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union’s Pride Centre Coordinator, and the current USSU Vice President of Student Affairs, Jack is a strong leader for mental health. Jack has also helped to create “safe-space” for queer people within First Nations cultural ceremonies by establishing gender-neutral sweats and pipe-ceremonies on campus. Jack’s culture plays a huge role in his well-being. To be able to partake in ceremonies that celebrate all aspects of his identity helps him to continue to take an active role in mental health advocacy. Jack recognizes that all people have a mental health and we owe it to ourselves to talk about it. For Jack, ACT!ON is a must.

Description: To mask or not to mask? A month into the COVID-19 lockdown, there are clear signs of confusion among the public. When we were all told to stay home and stop socializing, we were also told it was unnecessary to cover our faces in public if we practised rigorous social distancing and hand hygiene. The advice seemed sound, particularly since public health officials wanted to ensure that all available medical-grade masks were made available to people working in health care. But then, that simple narrative began to unravel.

Description: Faith communities are usually safe sanctuaries when the world seems bleak. A heartening side effect of belonging to a faith is that all have rituals and traditions for supporting members through the big events of life, both good and bad: births and deaths, marriages and divorces, coming of age and moving to the nursing home. But these rituals and traditions are at odds with physical distancing. With all the fear and suffering resulting from COVID-18, it’s a time when we most need our faith families, but we’ve been forced to disperse.

Collection: Manitoba COVID-19 Outbreak
Description: The insult to the injury suffered by restaurants forced to close during the pandemic was delivered by a company named Foodora. A Berlin-based online ordering and delivery app, Foodora announced last week that it was ceasing operations in Canada. That wasn't surprising; Foodora has been a colossal failure in most of the countries in which it has operated. What was a bit alarming was that the company chose to declare bankruptcy when it closed, owing restaurants across Canada nearly $5 million.

Description: Maybe you’ve seen them on social media. Maybe you’ve even seen them in your own neighbourhood. So-called "driveway parties," with people arranging lawn chairs, two metres apart. Or meeting in parking lots and socializing from their cars. It’s a physical-distancing loophole that might be tempting, especially as the weather begins to warm up, but Dr. Marcia Anderson, a medical officer of health for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, is pretty frank on the subject. "We would not recommend the driveway, lawn chair, car-parking gatherings."

Description: As we hunker down at home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, some of us may find ourselves in a room we’ve rarely occupied before: the kitchen. In many ways, the pandemic has changed our relationship with food. We can’t eat in restaurants. We aren’t spending Sunday dinners with the folks. Quick dashes to the grocery store have been replaced by once-a-week (or less frequent) excursions to stock up. Some of us are watching our expenses more closely than ever as a result of loss of income. Despite the challenges, there are easy ways to adapt to our temporary new reality.

Description: Pedestrians and cyclists along Wellington Crescent near Lanark Street were greeted by a peculiar sight in a homeowner’s front yard: a two-metre-tall, topiary camel sporting a bright yellow surgical mask, surrounded by pots containing close to 4,000 flowers, every last one of which was free for the taking as per a sign that read, "Help yourself to some spring."

Description: A study, first reported on Yahoo.com, went so far as to say weight-related conditions were to blame for the high number of hospitilizations resulting from COVID-19. Things like cardiovascular disease. Or diabetes/pre-diabetes. High BMI leading to respiratory problems. The study analyzed more than 7,000 cases of coronavirus from Feb. 12 to March 28. Out of the 457 individuals admitted to an intensive care unit in that time, 358 — or 78 per cent — reported having one or more underlying health conditions.
