NYC Public School 174

New York City's Public School 174 - William Sidney Mount is located in the borough of Queens, one of the most diverse in the nation. While we are an urban school, we are nestled in a quiet corner of our great city.

Our school is named for the famous landscape and portrait artist who was born on Long Island in 1807.

Our school has a commitment to the arts and collaborates with many of New York's arts and education institutions. We love working with primary sources of every kind so our work with the Library of Congress and Archive-it was a perfect fit. This year's fifth grade archivists chose their favorite sites to archive and hope to enjoy their choices when they look back at these URLs in the future.

Games for Girls and Guys, Education and Arts, and Shopping Web Sites were the rule of the day. What kid doesn't like to play games online, we love, work and promote the arts, and the Big Apple (New York City's nickname) is legend for its shopping. Because we will want to look back on our choices as a window on the past, we have come to appreciate what primary sources from the Library of Congress can tell us.

The big challenge was to find interesting web sites and then enter the descriptions while correctly spelling them. We tried to make the descriptions entertaining and appreciate what goes into short descriptions when we use search engines and key words to conduct searches within LOC.

Getting everyone organized was also difficult. We now understand how hard it is to archive and we had to think of why we wanted to save these sites for posterity. Perhaps children in the future will understand the interests of fifth grade kids in NYC in 2013. We also want to look back on it as a kind of scrapbook of memories of childhood. Perhaps there will be other reasons we haven't even thought of so we'll have the archives to look at and reflect.

The best part was that it was fun, and we are excited to know that people in the future will see what we chose. Learning how to use the site was also a challenge we enjoyed, and we now have a better understanding of how important it is to preserve the digital world which is always changing.
